Orthodox Christianity believes that basil sprouts from the earth soaked in the blood of Jesus Christ. Basil is grown in Orthodox churches and used to sanctify water. It is also a revered plant in the ancient traditions of India, Egypt and Greece, and in Judaism it is mentioned as a medicine that strengthens the body.

Apart from spirituality, basil finds wide use in traditional medicine due to its natural beneficial properties.

It is believed that Alexander the Great brought the first basil to our lands from the Far East.
